The Toyota Center was completed in the city of Houston in 2003
and is one of the most beautiful stadiums in the entire nation.
The stadium cost $175 million to build and was paid entirely by
the public. The nearest airport is 25 miles from the Toyota Center
and five players have had their numbers retired by the Rockets.
Those five men are Calvin Murphy (#23), Clyde Drexler (#24), Moses
Malone (#32), Hakeem Olajuwon (#34), and Rudy Tomjanovich (#45),
who actually coached the Rockets to two championships in 1994
and 1995. The taxpayers didn’t have any new taxes to pay
in order to cover the cost of the stadium and the Toyota Company
is paying the Rockets naming rights on the stadium. The Toyota
Center hosts around 200 events each year, many of which are through
the city itself for meetings and the like. The stadium is located
in the middle of downtown Houston and so there is ample parking
all around the Toyota Center and shuttle rides are available to
take you to and from the stadium from your parking lot. The city
of Houston is also looking to put in a bid to host the Olympic
Games in 2012 and the hope is that the building of the Toyota
Center will increase those chances.
