Home of: Memphis Grizzlies (NBA)
Memphis Tigers (NCAA)
Date opened: 1991
Capacity: 20,142
The Memphis Pyramid was completed in 1991 and immediately began
to play host to the University of Memphis Tigers for their college
basketball games. After the Vancouver Grizzlies moved to Memphis
before the 2002 season, they also began to play their home games
in the Pyramid and attendance has been steadily increasing year
after year. When the Grizzlies moved to Memphis, they were one
of the worst teams in the entire league but the team posted a
50 win season last year to make the playoffs and the fans were
there every step of the way including their home playoff games
against the San Antonio Spurs. The Tigers also made a run in the
NCAA tournament after they played well during the Conference-USA
schedule where they had to compete with the likes of Cincinnati,
Louisville, Charlotte, and Alabama-Birmingham. The Pyramid has
parking available for 2,000 cars and the stadium can hold more
than 20,000 people for college or NBA games. There are also 28
luxury suites and 1,000 club level seats available to fans. The
Pyramid isn’t used solely for basketball either. Over the
years, entertainers have wanted to come to the city and the Pyramid
can hold more than 21,000 for concerts and other large events.
The pyramid shaped building stands 32 stories high and has more
than a half million square feet available for use with a base
that covers 360,000 square feet.
