The Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association play their home games at Philips Arena, located at 100 Techwood Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA 30303. The building was finished in 1999 and also plays home to the Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League. Philips Arena cost $213.5 million to build and the funds were raised in there different ways. $130.75 million came from revenue bonds that will be paid thru revenues at the stadium, $20 million came from Turner Broadcasting and the remaining funding came from a car rental tax. The stadium can hold 20,300 people for basketball games and 18,750 people for hockey matches and also features 96 luxury suites and 2,100 club level seats. About 12,000 of the seats in Philips Arena sit on the lower level of the arena and so even fans with the more inexpensive seats have great vantage points and sight lines and this creates the wonderful atmosphere and environment at the stadium. The luxury suites are also open to enhance the acoustics for the numerous concerts that are also held at the Philips Arena. Three players have had their numbers retired by the Hawks over the franchise’s history. Those players are Bob Pettit (9), “The Human Highlight Film” Dominique Wilkins (21), and Lou Hudson (23). The Philips Arena is only walking distance from the CNN Center and the space in between the two building is filled with various types of shops and stores and other types of entertainment. The Atlanta Hawks previously played the Omni Center up until 1997 when they played in both the Georgia Dome and the Alexander Coliseum while waiting for the Philips Arena to be completed. Now the Hawks are looking better than they have in many years with a revamped lineup, a new coach, and a beautiful new stadium, and the Hawks and Thrashers are looking to have many bright years in the near future while playing in the new Philips Arena.
